What Power Does a Sauna Need?

Electrical requirements are not one-size-fits-all. Some infrared cabins operate on 120 volts, while traditional electric heaters typically require a dedicated higher-voltage circuit installed by a qualified electrician. The model you choose determines the plan.

The short version

Choose the sauna first. Plan the circuit second.

Do not have an electrician guess what a future sauna might need. Pick the actual model, get its current installation requirements, then have the electrical work designed around those specifications and local code.

120V

Many infrared saunas

Residential infrared cabins often use 120-volt power, but the required amperage can vary significantly by model. A dedicated circuit may still be required.

240V

Most traditional electric heaters

Traditional electric sauna heaters commonly require a dedicated 240-volt hardwired circuit. Heater size, cabin size and manufacturer specifications determine the actual breaker and wiring requirements.

Important: “120V” does not automatically mean “plug it into any outlet.” For example, current Cal Solara indoor models have different amperage requirements across the range and require an independent circuit. Always use the requirements for the exact model being installed.
A better installation sequence

Three steps that prevent expensive surprises.

Step 1

Select the model.

Know whether you are buying infrared or traditional, the exact cabin, and the heater package.

Step 2

Check the specifications.

Confirm voltage, amperage, circuit, receptacle or hardwire requirements from the current manufacturer documentation.

Step 3

Have an electrician plan it.

A qualified electrician can evaluate panel capacity, routing, disconnects and the requirements of applicable local electrical codes.

Real-world examples

Even saunas in the same category can be different.

Cal Solara infrared

Cal’s current indoor manual lists the Solara 2, 3 and 4 as 110–120V models, but with different circuit requirements depending on model. Cal also specifies an independent circuit and recommends professional electrical planning where a new circuit is needed.

Traditional electric sauna

A traditional heater has substantially more output because it is heating the room and sauna stones. These systems are commonly hardwired, and the required circuit is matched to the heater selected for the cabin.

Our rule: never buy electrical equipment, install a receptacle or size a circuit from a generic internet chart. The sauna’s current installation manual and your electrician are the authorities.
